American Indian Autobiography

Pre-Contact Autobiography: Bibliography

What follows is a brief list of sources one might consult to learn more about pre-contact Indian autobiography. The list includes mostly primary sources (places where examples of the narrative modes themselves can be found). It also lists a few secondary, scholarly works on the subject. As mentioned elsewhere, many of the pre-contact autobiographical "genres" appear as elements in the subsequent written tradition. However, for reasons of scope, this bibliography does not address such transformations of the oral tradition.
