They fight at their husband and brothers' sides
Chapter 35
The women make the last horrific sacrifice before
the City of Pines is burnt to the ground. They sacrifice the Spanish
and Tlascalans who
have entered the pyramid. The women and
the priests then hurl themselves over the pyramid to their death.
Otomie reverts back to her "savage" origins,
to the horror of Thomas.
He tells her he is her husband no more 287-289

Thomas and Otomie and their son surrender to
Bernal Diaz
Thomas is relieved of his oath 300

Thomas wreaks vengeance on de Garcia, who has
killed his remaining son 302
He pursues de Garcia to Xaca and the pit of its
volcano
de Garcia fights with an imaginary enemy

Otomie pays her farewell and commits suicide,
recognizing that Thomas has never forgotten about Lily
Thomas is reunited with Marina, who gives him
money for a safe passage home.

Thomas poses as a Spaniard on board the carak
bound for Spain
He is almost killed outside of London
He finds Lily aged, but lovely as before (38)

Thomas pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth, whom
he has given an emerald. He writes this story after Lily has died
(87) because the pain
from knowing about his earlier family always
disturbed her
