Setting:
French Indochina (what is today Vietnam), during 1940's

Characters:

Eliane--administrator of rubber plantation and adopted mother of Camille
Camille--adopted daughter of Eliane; her real parents die in an airplane crash.  Camille is imprisoned for her Communist activities and then she is released; she later works for the independence of Vietnam from France
Jean Baptiste--French Naval officer (Lieutenant) and lover of Camille; has son with her. He is shot for associating with Communists
Tanh--Vietnamese Communist who enters arranged marriage with Camille
Soa--Vietnamese woman whom befriends Camille during the exodus from the cities; she is killed by the French Colonial Regime
Guy Assselin--Eliane's friend and the man who investigates Camille's whereabouts
Yvette--The woman whose husband is fired by Eliane; she later leaves her husband, becomes a cabaret singer and joins Guy
Etienne Marie Loic--the son of Camile who is ultimately raised by Eliane in Paris
