2. How do symbols in the lullaby create a mood for the story?
Something bad is going to happen
hooves bleeding
dagger stabbing
blood running
sheltering the innocent--rose, carnation, baby, sing song of the lullaby--lull the baby to sleep

Surrealism
blood running like a river
horse is crying
series of options but the horse is drawn to his fate
dagger plunging into eye--seems more symbolic than literal--suggests danger
Lullaby is a warning--singers recognize a place of safety
Lullaby--seems to foretell doom, it's graphic, disturbing
Lullaby is a warning
Lullaby is a conversation about the marriage between Leonardo and the wife
Lullaby parallels the mother's own connection to the vineyard and the buried dead
sense of forbidden
sense of denial--on the horse's part and then projected to the larger theme of forbidden love
water suggests life but also death--use of contraries
You can't lead a horse to water
Dead stream
Leonardo and the horse
Horses signify unbridled sexuality

Leonardo becomes a center piece in the drama; Lorca puts a face on him
Other characters are nameless--they are described in terms of their role
