Here are some things you might want
to look at:
1. Several times throughout the
story, we are given insight into how Okonkwo feels about his children.
How does he feel about Ezinma? How does he feel about Nwoye?
2. What happens to the “ill-fated boy” in chapter seven? Who is he? How does he see Okonkwo as a father? How does Okonkwo see him?
3. What is the name of Okonkwo’s village in his Fatherland? The Village in his motherland? What region are these villages in?
4. What unspeakable event(s) occur during the Week of Peace?
5. In chapter twenty Nwoye challenges the expectations of Okonkwo. How so?
6. Okonkwo has three wives. Make sure you know the names of his wives and children.
7. What do Okonkwo and his people eat and drink on a regular basis? What about during special occasions?
8. At the end of chapter 20, Obierika and Okonkwo discuss various events that have come to pass since the arrival of the colonialists. What is said in their exchange? Who says what?
9. In chapter thirteen, there is
a type of accident that occurs. What is this accident, and what are
some of the outcomes? How do these outcomes affect Okonkwo and his
family?
10. At the end of the novel, we
find that the District Commissioner is a busy man. Why?
11. What event occurs in chapter 7 during the harmattan season?
12. The missionaries (the Christians) have “God.” The Nigerian Ibo have several different gods. Do they have a “main” god? If so, what is the name of their main god?
13. In chapter seventeen, the missionaries ask the Mbutans for a favor. What is it they want? What, if anything, do they get? Where?
14. Okonkwo is a man who is very
set in his ways (to say the least). For instance, what would you
say about how he rules his household? How he treats his friends,
his wives, or his children?
15. Okonkwo’s people have
some interesting and foreign customs. For example, what happens when
a wedding is arranged? When children (ex: twins) are born?
What happens when people die without honor or become, through disease or
suicide, an abomination?
16. At what point do things fall apart?
